The Bee and the Bud

Hi. I'm Sarah. I'm a wetland scientist during the day, but dream of a career in the creative world. When I'm not wearing CarHartts and muddy boots, I enjoy eating fancy meals with my husband, searching for and creating beautiful things, and baking desserts. Send me a message: lacysc@gmail.com

  1. On Saturday morning, Daniel and I went treasure hunting at Good JuJu and the other fine flea markets in the West Bottoms.  As soon as we walked in the door, we found our piece: a bigger-than-most sideboard/buffet.  I think she’s grand, and I can’t wait to put a fancy bar set-up atop her.  She cost x amount plus 80 bucks.  The 80 bucks is the amount Daniel bribed the tow truck guy with to release our car after Daniel ran after him and banged on his door.  We learned an $80 lesson on Saturday which could have been a $230 lesson.  You guys know how much I hate learning lessons.

We also found this rug at Anthropologie in the sale bin.  I originally thought she’d be lovely in the living room, but now I might love her under the dining room table.

  2. Weekend

This weekend Daniel and I traveled to Springfield, MO to visit my grandparents on both sides of my family.  We are always a little nostalgic when we stay in Springfield as we reminisce about our carefree college days at Drury.  So in addition to hanging out with my family, we made sure to indulge in some of our favorite Springfield treats.

    -  Our first stop in Springfield after dropping off our bags at Gr. Elaine and Gr. Frank’s house was Andy’s Frozen Custard.  Daniel and I would scrounge together pennies for this custard during college, and it doesn’t disappoint.

    -  On Saturday we went to the MudHouse, the best coffeehouse in the state, to eat lunch with Daniel’s littlest sister, Lauran, and a family friend.  Lauran just started college and is still trying to grasp all the newish it entails.  I was super lucky in that Daniel and our friend Jonah and I were literally best friends by day 7 of college, but I always feel for girls during those first couple of weeks when everyone is trying to make new friends.

    -  The General and Kitty (my paternal grandparents) are going great for a couple of old people.  We chatted about jobs and new homes, and after a few tight hugs, I left with the smell of the General’s aftershave in my hair.

    -  After dinner with my mom’s parents and my uncle Jeff, Gr. Elaine taught me to crochet, a request I believe has moved me into a position to inherit something real nice.

    -  Daniel and I finished up the trip with a cocktail at the MudLounge and a stroll through our alma mater.  We saw a freshman passed out on the sidewalk on her way back to the dorms from the fraternity houses with her friends and a cop standing over her.  An upperclassman, standing on his porch across the street, yelled, “Hey, hey!  Welcome to Drury!” and it felt like I was 18 all over again.

  3. Weekend

Our best friends from college, Lydia, Jonah, and Andrew, visited KC this past weekend, and it was just like old times.  Lydia and Jonah mentioned that they’ve considered moving to KC after Lydia finishes residency, so Daniel and I tried to show them a great time to convince them of the awe and wonder of KC proper.  This is what we did.

    - Pool party at my parents’ house.  Andrew is in the Navy, so a ridiculous game involving treading water was invented.  I once was a lifeguard, so the risk of drowning was very low.  (Picture me on the lifeguard stand at age 17.  Body like an 8th grader, WWJD lanyard and whistle around my neck, barking at kids to stop running.)

    - Drinks at The Phoenix and Van Morrison covers by Mr. Dan Doran.  If you haven’t seen Dan play at The Phoenix, check the website for his next scheduled performance.  Bea, you will appreciate this.  His name is actually Dan Door-in, not Dan Door-ran.  I agree.  What we’ve been calling him makes for a better stage name.

    - Aixois coffee bar for lattes, quiche, and waffles.  I’m going back for the nutella on a fresh baguette.

    - WW1 museum at Liberty Memorial.  I learned so much!

    - El Camino Real in KCK for delicious, hole-in-the-wall Mexican food.

    - Julian for dinner.  Celina even answers the phone when you make a reservation.  We’re so down-to-earth in KC.

    - Jaunt around Loose Park.

    I miss them already.  DU.

  4. Moscow Mule.  R Bar.  So delicious.

  5. Weekend

    Friday

    - Daniel and I went to a fish fry, and I learned how to properly filet trout to avoid any bones.  And then I took a small bone and used it as a toothpick like Garfield.  (I didn’t).

    - Daniel and I watched Platinum Hit, one of our new favorite shows on Bravo.  Daniel watches until the judges inevitably pick the awful song as the winner.  Two weeks ago when Johnny got sent home, Daniel complained to Jewel (one of the judges) via Twitter.  And then he congratulated her on the new baby.  By the way, has anyone else noticed that Jewel’s pregnancy breasts seem to be the 5th and 6th judges on this show?  Everytime she walks into a room, the camera shacks.

    Saturday

    - I went to a bridal shower for my lovely friend Erin whose getting married in October.  The punch alone was forth the trip to Olathe.

    - Daniel and I melted at the KC Sporting game against Toronto.  We won 4 to 2.  I hope to sit in the Cauldron someday.

    Sunday

    - I hung out at the in-laws house while Daniel went to Joplin with his dad to drop off furniture.  Daniel’s dad is obsessed with Mafia/mob biographies, and I snatched Zero at the Bone from his bookshelf to take home.  I’m completely enthralled in it.  It’s about the kidnapping of Bobby Greenlease from his elementary school, Notre Dame de Sion, in downtown Kansas City in 1953.  At the time, it was the biggest ransom/kidnapping in history after the Lindburgh case.  I more than highly recommend it.

  6. It’s Gettin’ Real in the Trader Joe’s Parking Lot
Daniel and I went to the Trader Joe’s opening in KC on Friday Night, an event I thought our marriage might not survive.  After looking for a parking spot for five minutes, Daniel promised the following headline in the Saturday Kansas City Star, Black Camry Drives Through Grocery Store on Opening Day.
Highlights:
- Berry Blend Dried Fruit, Two Buck Chuck, and delicious frozen apple things
- People were buying cases of Two Buck Chuck like it was the Apocalypse.
- We stood in the checkout lane 25 minutes.
- Nobody was injured.

  7. Dan and Cicely –

Being a baby and all, I suspect that Austin failed to tell you how much fun he had with Aunt Sarah on Saturday, so I’m going to fill you in.  First of all, he didn’t cry for even a single second.  He was super shy at first and stood by the front door for awhile contemplating why he was still at home but you guys were not.  In fact, when we went outside in the late afternoon, for what I hoped to be a cruise around the block in his wagon, he only permitted me to turn circles in the driveway, afraid you might show up while we were gone, find him missing, and then post pictures of him on all of the neighborhood light poles.  Missing:  Cute Baby.  Says baby with a French accent and hello with an English accent.

While in the garage, Austin found Dan’s golf balls and loved to send them sailing down the driveway for me to chase after.  FYI, we did have one errant golf ball that is probably under Dan’s duck blind somewhere.  Other activities included jumping on pillows in the living room (you might check the pillow arrangement), reading every book in the house, eating snacks and dinner, pushing Yelmo around in the stroller, and playing with Tupperware.

One other thing.  Am I correct in assuming that you don’t use that lamb that makes the soothing noises?  When Austin tossed it out of the toy basket, the breeching whale noise came on.  He looked at it, looked at me, looked at the lamb, and then looked at me as if to say Is that thing possessed?

Thanks for letting me watch the little man.  I had a blast.

    Love,

    Aunt Sarah

    P.S. I stole a Swiss Cake Roll.

For those family members who read this blog, some of Austin’s new words include the following:

Hi Debbie – I’m told this is a teacher at daycare.

    Grover

Big Bird – Now this doesn’t sound like Big Bird, but he says the same thing every time you ask.  Sounds more little yellow which I’m going with.  Let’s just assume this 1.5 year old knows his colors.

  8. Weekend Highlights

My husband says to me, “You haven’t done Weekend Highlights yet.  I want to know what you did all weekend.”  We spent the whole weekend together.

    Here it goes Daniel.

    Friday

    - We went to the Royals/Cardinals game, and I had my first Bud Light Lime of the season.  This means it’s officially summer.  My friend Kristen, who’s moving back to Chicago, had her Chicago girlfriends in town, and they are the best.  Why is everyone moving to Chicago?!  NOOOO!!!!

    - We danced the night away at O’Dowd’s.  The cover band completely had me until they did the Alicia Keys part in Empire State of the Mind.

    Saturday

    - I drove to Excelsior Springs (the locals say Excel-sur), and we had breakfast at Ray’s Cafe.  I’ll have the eggs and toast.  And could I get the health code violation on the side?  It really is a lovely downtown.

    - Bea and Josh A.  hosted an End of the World Party at their apartment.  They made yummy Naan pizzas, and we played an End of Times trivia game that Josh created.  It was lots of fun, and Josh A. did a great job.

    Sunday

    - I inherited Grandma Kitty’s sewing machine, which is completely different from my mom’s.  I took me an hour, but I figured out how to thread the bobbin without a manual.  I was so impressed with myself, I’m still talking about it.  I think my first project will be cloth cocktail napkins.  My mom says she has a pattern for a wrap dress that might fit me.  This will naturally come next.  Just call me DVF for short.

  9. Weekend Highlights

This weekend was about celebrating Daniel’s graduation and mothers.

    - We hosted a party for our families prior to the graduation ceremony.  My mom and dad were absolute champs and helped me pull everything together.

    - My brother Chris and his wife Kim revealed the name of their daughter due in August.  I’m not giving it away, but it’s absolutely lovely and very meaningful.

    - Daniel graduated from the UMKC School of Dentistry!  He’s a Dr. and I can’t believe it.

    - My brother Dan’s family, Bea, Daniel and me, and my parents enjoyed a lovely picnic at the Nelson Atkin’s museum.  If you haven’t been yet, you must check out the new installation.  A stainless steel tree put in by Dan’s company.

  10. At 1 am on Saturday night, Daniel and I drove to Kansas to eat at Waffle House.  He had begged me for weeks to visit the House in celebration of passing his operative boards, and I finally agreed.  In college, when I crushed hard on Daniel, I often made the trip to Waffle House despite unwelcome circumstances.

1.       Daniel once called me at 2 in the morning during a blizzard to ask if I wanted to join him at Waffle House.  My response was probably something like, “Of course I haven’t been sleeping.  I’d love to go!”  Sarah rubs the sleep from her eyes and pulls on her jeans while Bea, in the next bed over, rolls her eyes.

2.      While a kidney stone chilled out in my ureter in the fall of our senior year, I popped one too many pain pills and accompanied Daniel to Waffle House.  One waffle later and an hour of nausea, I puked in his bathroom while he studied for an anatomy test.

Love.  It’s crazy business.
