I’m a wetland scientist during the day, but dream of a career in the creative world. When I’m not wearing CarHartts and muddy boots, I enjoy eating fancy meals with my husband, searching for and creating beautiful things, and baking desserts.

The truffles and macaroons were out of this world. Daniel and I went there again last night for dinner. The best part of the meal was this tiny cracker filled with melty aged cheddar that erupted in an explosion of flavor in your mouth. We both decided we could have eaten a bowlful with a beer.

This skirt from Anthropologie is like a sweatshirt on your butt....

This skirt from Anthropologie is like a sweatshirt on your butt.
- Trader Joe’s Power Berries. After your second handful, just remind yourself that they do contain real fruit juice (inside the dark chocolate coating).

- Suave Rosemary and Mint shampoo. I’m a sucker for edible smells (basil, mint, rosemary, citrus, lavender), and this shampoo smells heavenly and earthy. If you have thick hair like myself, pick up a thick conditioner because, well, it is Suave.

- I did my first boot camp at work last night, and I’m so sore. If I keep it up, I think I may see muscles again.

- Daniel and I booked a Memorial Day weekend trip to DC with two of our best friends from college. To say I’m excited would be an understatement.

- I turn 28 on the 28th, and I still have a good feeling about this year.

- My pop got a pottery wheel for Christmas, and a few weekends ago he promised me lessons this summer. I’ve been daydreaming about them ever since.

- Most of my family will be in KC this weekend for Anna’s baptism.

- I’m having a great hair day.

- I know I’m late to the show on this, but primer under your make-up is a game-changer.

Mom,

Geraniums by Jorey Hurley

Weekend

- Daniel and I fully intended to go to the movie theater, as we do on many Friday nights, but we inevitably parked ourselves on the couch and watched a move OnDemand. Drive was interesting. The movie swings between low-key, sweet scenes with very little dialogue to BOOM Ryan Gosling is crushing a guy’s face with his bootheel.

- I baked coconut macaroons for my dad and a chocolate chip pie for Daniel, and we all, plus my mom, watched the Mizzou vs. KU game. The good guys won.

- We ate Sunday brunch at Julian with our friends Jon and Heather and their kids, Gabe and Hadley. Gabe is 2.5 years old and a complete wise guy. His classic phrases are so grown up and stolen from the mouths of this parents. Hadley is 7 months old and a delight. I hadn’t seen her since she was three days old. We toasted Jon’s new job at The American Restaurant with mimosas. Considering I can name five former chefs from The American who have gone on to do great things in the culinary world, I know he’s going to make a name for himself.

- Half of the Super Bowl was spent with Daniel’s high school buddies, and the other half was spent with our friends Matt and Robin. I care for neither team and only paid attention during the last 3 minutes of the game.

- On the homefront, I’m trying to love our existing desk instead of buying a new desk. My heart warmed a little when I replaced the drawer pulls with dandies from Anthropologie. However, the desk chair, an awful piece of work from OfficeMax, must go.

If I had the ability to (work blocks all streaming media), I would provide Lauryn Hill’s Doo Wop...

If I had the ability to (work blocks all streaming media), I would provide Lauryn Hill’s Doo Wop (That Thing) for your listening enjoyment. So I encourage you to find this song and instantly improve your morning. It’s currently working at my desk.

Fun Fact: When I was a freshman in high school, I participated in speech and debate events at surrounding schools on Saturdays. Before and after my event (storytelling), I would sit in the school hallway with my headphones on and listen to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill on repeat while other students practiced their dramatic interpretations for unseen audiences.

Happy Groundhog Day!

Good morning.

Weekend

- On Friday night, our friend Logan invited us and two other couples to a wine tasting at the Cellar Rat. We enjoyed four wines, cheese, cured meats and crostini. All were delicious. I reached optimal tipsy level, and my DD even swung by the store for me to get Lucky Charms and waffle fries before the party continued at our house.

- I painted our hallway green. It’s pretty bright, and I don’t believe Daniel is entirely sold on it. For now I’m giving it a shot. If we still aren’t both members of Team Green once I’ve transformed the space into an art gallery of sorts, I’ll bite the bullet and repaint. I’ll post a picture once the photo/art collage is in progress.

- Daniel and I had a lovely dinner at the new Mexican place on the Plaza, Zocalo. Definitely affordable, and I must recommend the margaritas and the tres leche cake.

- We watched Super 8, and I LOVED it. Reminiscent of Stand By Me. Mom and Dad, you will like this one.

- I started reading Hitch-22 by Christopher Hitchens. My copy as a new foreword that was written after he was diagnosed with cancer. His knowledge of literary works is astounding. So far, I highly recommend it.

Thoughts

1. Our great friends, Jill and Rob, just announced that they will be moving to Europe this summer on a military assignment. I’m super excited for them, and I have been daydreaming about living in Europe ever since. I’ve visited Italy and Romania, and an extended adventure would seem just fine.

2. I did not enjoy The Descendants, and I don’t agree that the movie or George Clooney deserve Oscar nods. Clooney is a fine actor, but I don’t think this performance deserves the golden award. I’m rooting for Midnight in Paris.

3. I’m going to paint my hallway tomorrow. Green.

4. Daniel is now the solo dentist at a new practice. He’s been afforded a wonderful opportunity, and I believe he’s going to be immensely successful. On Sunday morning, a patient called him in pain, and I have to admit, listening to him talk to his patients and call in prescriptions gets me a little hot. He’s so professional and so kind.

Two things that make me anxious every single time

1. Catching the shrimp in my mouth when the Japanese steakhouse guy flings it above my head. Typically it smacks me on the forehead and then falls to rest in my lap where it leaves a nice stain on my clothes. During my most recent trip, I even tried to decline participation in this portion of the Japanese steakhouse experience that others, to my disbelief, actually seem to enjoy. The guy wouldn’t let me, and before I knew it, there was shrimp accelerating towards my face, probably pulling G’s.

2. Pulling off a piece of bread from the larger piece of pita bread during Communion that will be too small to actually dip in the grape juice without dunking my fingers in the communal cup. The grape juice is the best part, and when I seemingly pull off a pita crumb, I must do the fake dunk and return to my pew with a dry piece of bread in my mouth having never received the blood of Christ.
