The Bee and the Bud

Hi. I'm Sarah. I'm a wetland scientist during the day, but dream of a career in the creative world. When I'm not wearing CarHartts and muddy boots, I enjoy eating fancy meals with my husband, searching for and creating beautiful things, and baking desserts. Send me a message: lacysc@gmail.com

  1. It’s no secret that my best ideas come to me while I’m lying in bed.  Which means I must have decided on this career path sometime during mid-day.  Anyway, Daniel and I were discussing which items we will need to buy fairly quickly after moving into our new home, and one of those items is a tv stand.  Our current stand is plastic, and the doors were lost long before it come into our possession.  So we were searching on-line for options, and the only one I sort of liked was a tv stand with glass doors which Daniel smartly mentioned was necessary if we want to be able to turn the tv on and off with the doors closed.  I was not fully supporting this piece of furniture because I really don’t want our dvd collection to be visible at all times.

Now don’t get me wrong, we have a very respectable dvd collection except for maybe Brotherhood of the Wolf which I have refused to watch since Daniel and I started dating.  Back in college when I just crushed hard on Daniel for three years, I would watch this movie with him because it meant I sat near him for two hours.  In fact I had it so bad, I once watched Gandhi with him, an approximately 16-hour movie that one should get college credit for.

Anyway, I decided that if we go with a glass-doored tv stand, I’m going to type each title on pretty paper and cover each dvd case so they look like pretty color-coordinated vintage books.  Genius or genius?  You won’t hurt my feelings.  Daniel gave me the eye roll/you’re-adorable-in-a-small-child-kind-of-way look last night.

  2. I had a lady date with adultlifetaketwo last night, and it was lovely.  We chatted for two hours about boyfriends/husbands, houses, and other tumblrs, and I know we probably could have covered another two.  She’s great, and I can’t wait to meet the other KC tumblrs.

  3. Big News!

Daniel and I signed a contract on our first house on Friday!  We received the final counter-offer during my flight to Chicago, and after a brisk two-mile walk to a Kinko’s on Division, while my girlfriends primped for a night out, all the signatures were complete.  The house is a 1925 bungalow-style house in the Brookside neighborhood within walking distance to a lot of our favorite hang-outs.  We close on September 28, so let me know if you’d like to help us move that weekend!  I’ll be spending the next six weeks creating mood boards for each room so that we aren’t overwhelmed during the decorating process.

We feel super lucky to have snagged the place because it was really the only one we’d seen that we were really excited about.

    House perks include:

    - Two-car garage with private driveway (hard to find in Brookside).

    - Big porch

    - Hardwood floors throughout

    - Two full baths (also rare in Brookside in our price range)

    - Mud room

    - And finally I would like to mention that it has a doggy door!  You know what will be on my Christmas list.

  4. At home recovering from a three-day bachelorette party in Chicago.  Love these girls.  More to come.

  5. Happy Two Year Anniversary Daniel!  I’m sorry I’m in the field again this week and not home with you.  You really are the best, and I love you very much.
(Daniel and I celebrated our anniversary on Saturday with dinner in Prairie Village at Story and a stay at the Raphael.  Some probably think it’s silly to stay at a hotel just 25 blocks from home, but it felt like a holiday.  We stayed up until one watching movies, woke up at 8:30 for breakfast in bed, and went back to sleep until 11.  So nice.  I also highly recommend Story.  I had a Light n Stormy, sweetbreads, braised short ribs, and the chocolate mousse.  Daniel had some great duck and the german chocolate cake.  One of the best restaurants I’ve tried in KC.)

  6. I finally figured out an eight dollar solution to getting pictures off my camera.  So I reward you with pictures from a recent Sporting KC game.  I think I might want season tickets next year.

  7. Field Week

I’m back from the field.  A soul-crushing week in Conway, Arkansas spent searching for wetlands and streams for a future transmission line project.  That’s a power line for those outside the biz.  Highlights or lowlights to follow.

    -  A six hour drive on Sunday.  Did I mention that I don’t get paid for travel time?  Hello half weekend.

    -  Did you know that Nickelback has new songs that get played on the radio?  I was baffled.  And then blown away when I looked to my right and saw my coworker bobbin’ his head to the music as if he enjoyed it.

    -  We started working everyday at 5:30 AM to avoid the heat as much as possible.  Everyday was in the hundreds, and Wednesday was a record 114 degrees.  That’s 1-1-4 actual degrees, not the heat index or the feels like…

    -  After lunch when the sun was high, my coworker and I were stopping every 300 yards under a shade tree to avoid collapsing from heat exhaustion.

    -  Somewhere a long the way, I stepped in a nest of seed ticks and now have no less than 150 bites on my legs.

    -  I wore snake chaps.  One guy almost stepped on a copperhead.

    -  Due to the heat and I suspect bug spray, my neon pink sports bra stained my chest bright pink.  Thankfully this faded before I came home.

    -  On Wednesday afternoon, I was told I was done and could go home in the morning.  Two hours later the project manager called and said I had more field work to do on Thursday.  I almost burned down the Candlewood Suites.

That is all.  It’s now the freakin’ weekend baby.  I’m about to have me some fun.

  8. My Bea is back and there’s gonna be trouble…

     Seriously.  She’s back!

  9. Age 17 and 13.  In the Vogue article on these two, the author describes Elle shopping at Barney’s in a vintage Chanel skirt.  I can’t even fathom the thought of wearing vintage Chanel in middle school.  When I was 13, I was still wearing The Limited II, and my classmates would drive two hours to Tulsa to the nearest Old Navy to get their new threads.
Someone please tell me they agree with me when I say that The Limited II had a lot more crediability in the mid-90s.  It used to be the pre-teen world headquarters for plaid skorts paired with tastefully done sweatshirts with a II applique.  You remember this right?  Back in the day when II used to be just a section in the back of The Limited.  Now it’s all pre-pre-teen wear whose clientele begs to go next door to the Build-A-Bear Factory.  Ughh.
